'Minecraft Earth' Gets a Bit more Physical Thanks to the new Minis that Are NFC-enabled

When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it immediately drew comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of virtual reality and activities that are based on location. However, it was quite different (as senior editor Jess Conditt will attest) in that it didn't require players to actually go outside to partake in the mining and building game. Now, Mattel has added another fun aspect to Minecraft Earth that Pokemon Go can't really boast about: NFC-enabled figurines.

The Boost Mini figures are priced at $5 each, and feature several characters from the Minecraft franchise that include Steve, Alex, creepers ducks, a cow and others. Each figure is adorable on its own, but placing it against an NFC-enabled device can unlock specific abilities within Minecraft Earth for a certain period of time, which is displayed by a timer on the screen. You'll also earn XP by registering the mini with the game, as an additional incentive to collect all of them (or take them away from friends).

The first batch of this spring's release includes 20 minis that have 10 abilities.  minecraft servers If you're the type of person who wants to take your Minecraft Earth game out and about, Mattel is also selling an accessory case in the shape of a potion, which clips onto your belt.

Mattel introduced new $3.50 blind-box miniatures that are themed to vanilla Minecraft. They also have larger figures of 3.5 inches that are compatible with the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity is particularly enjoyable as it's sized in a way that is comparable to the other toys, measuring over six inches tall. The 3.5-inch figurines are $10 and the monstrosity is expected to be priced at $25 when it is released in the fall.
